ABOUT THE Project
PageMaths is a specialised social networking platform for researchers, academics, and professionals to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge. Users publish research projects, build academic profiles, follow peers and organisations, share content, and communicate in real time — all in a dedicated space designed for knowledge workers rather than general social media.
The Challenge
Academics and researchers had no dedicated platform that combined research publishing, professional networking, and real-time collaboration. LinkedIn was too generic. Academia.edu lacked social features. The platform needed to handle complex data relationships — citations, co-authorship, organisation hierarchies, job postings, events — alongside a social feed, direct messaging, and granular privacy controls, all at scale.
Our Approach
We designed the platform around three core pillars: research, networking, and communication. MongoDB handles the flexible, schema-varied data across profiles, projects, posts, and organisations. Elasticsearch powers fast, relevant search across users, research, jobs, and events. Socket.io drives real-time messaging and notifications. Firebase handles push notifications to mobile and web. React.js on the frontend with a Node.js API layer ties everything together into a cohesive, fast experience.
The Solution
A full-featured academic social network built on React.js and Node.js. Researchers publish projects with abstracts, keywords, citations, and media. A social feed supports posts with customisable visibility, multimedia, quotes, and comments. Universities and companies create verified organisation profiles, post jobs, and host events. Direct messaging with real-time chat, URL previews, and content sharing keeps collaboration flowing. Elasticsearch delivers fast, personalised discovery across the entire platform.
